$3.6B Market for 5G Cars by 2027

0

21 February 2022, UK. According to a recent report, it is predicted that 367 million connected cars will be on the roads by 2027, and each one represents a potential revenue stream for telcos. This is up from the 192 million cars that are connected and driving today, according to Juniper Research at the end of 2022.

The increase that is in motion is primarily fuelled by the advanced development of driver assistance systems alongside the uptake of vehicle infotainment in the private vehicle market. On the other hand and by comparison,  commercial vehicles are running behind in the, and by 2027 are expected to account for only 20% of connected cars worldwide. Juniper Research shows that 5G cars will be a $3.6B market by 2027.

“5G can allow automotive OEMs to upgrade the in-vehicle experience. In a vehicle market transitioning to electric vehicles, improving the user experience is key,” said research co-author Nick Maynard. “Operators hold the critical role in reliably enabling this, making them the partners of choice as their 5G networks rapidly expand.”

Meanwhile, current Telcos are developing solutions, signing up to new industry associations, and agreeing to partnerships that will enable high-performance automotive connectivity, Vodafone is perhaps one of the more vocal ones, at least recently anyway.

In September 2022, Vodafone partnered with positioning specialist Topcon to develop precise positioning solutions that improve accuracy by just centimeters. Such advancements could prove vital to the adoption of vehicle-to-everything (V2X) technology, the telco said. By December Vodafone revealed it had deployed a hybrid 5G network for car maker Porsche at its tech development center in Italy. It provides Porsche with a private network to test out connected car technology and gives locals living nearby access to 5G.
