Let’s talk cloud computing, communications, and VoIP. Cavell is a research and consulting firm based in the Netherlands. Their primary research focus is new market opportunities presented by the adoption of next-generation network technologies, namely Future Voice services such as Hosted UC, SIPT, and IPX. Previous bespoke research has also covered Future Network and Future City technologies, including CDN, SDN and Mobile Data. Cavell’s research combines research techniques and comprehensive modeling to provide a unique yet accurate picture of the market based on the related analytics.
Carvell announced in the latest study, published in September 2017, that substantial growth since March of last year brought the IK hosted VoIP market to well over 3 million users. This makes the United Kingdom the leader in Europe with regards to the number of Hosted VoIP users. The research collected by Carvell was obtained from working with 94 UK service providers and confirms the market growth of 11% since March 2017 with a million users connected in the space of seven calendar quarters. It is truly an incredible increase when compared to the previous million which to over three years to achieve. It is quite the feat.
Smaller service providers show slower growth compared to their much larger competitors with growth driven by approximately ten key providers. Yes, the UK is in the lead, but, it is important to remember that we continue to chase other European nations when it comes to penetration into the total user base. Although Cavell research shows recent Microsoft growth in the 1000+ user enterprise space, the VoIP market continues to be SME focussed (sub 50 users).
UK SIP Trunking is focussed on two or three large providers that don’t show nearly as much growth as it once did. This is partly due to the 2025 ISDN turn off date set by BT, but, this is really too far into the future to have an impact on the current market. However, with that said, the European mainland ISDN Turnoff dates have far more aggressive timeframes and are have a massive impact on consumer buying behaviours. The result is that many of the United Kingdom’s service providers are focusing on hosted VoIP rather than SIP Trunking. Cavell predicts that the SIP Trunking market would boom and show huge growth percentages if BT was more proactive and start with the migration of its ISDN base to IP.
